As National Athletic Trainer Month wraps up, we are sharing a story of a local man who is alive today thanks to a Bon Secours trainer who stepped in to save the day.
Andy Martin finished his race in second place at Furman in February when he collapsed from a heart attack. Martin who is in great shape and runs eight races a year tells 7news this was something he never imagined happening.
Thanks to athletic trainer Ryan Sanders and a Furman University police officer, Martin is here today after they conducted CPR and applied the automatic external defibrillator.
Now Sanders and Martin are spreading the message that more people should be trained.
“You go to the mall and something happens you might be the person walking by, and AEDs walk you through what to do so I just urge people to grab it and it will tell you what you need to do,” Sanders said.
Classes are offered by various organizations across the Upstate for certification. Thanks to a new law, all high school students will graduate with the training.
