Fire at old mill in Chesnee being investigated as possible arson

CHESNEE, S.C. (WSPA) – Crews responded to a fire at an old mill in Chesnee that’s now being investigated as possible arson.

According to Chesnee Fire officials, the call came in for a business fire on Alabama Avenue near Pickens Avenue at about 4 p.m. Sunday.

They say the fire destroyed the cooling tower part of the mill, which is adjacent to the structure.

It’s being investigated as possible arson because several witnesses at the Dollar General nearby saw people leaving the area around the time of the fire, officials said.

The building has been vacant for about 3 years, no injuries were reported.

Crews will remain on scene to monitor any hot spots.

We’ll continue to update this story as more information becomes available.
