HODGES, S.C. (WSPA) – Emergency crews responded Monday night to a large fire at a church in Hodges.
Greenwood County dispatch officials said multiple crews responded at about 8:50 p.m. to the Hodges Presbyterian Church for a fire. The church is located on Main Street.
According to Greenwood County Emergency Services, the fire is believed to have started in the steeple and spread to the rear of the church.
A passerby reported the fire after seeing flames coming out of a window, according to officials.
Officials said that there were thunderstorms in the area at the time the fire started and that lightning may be to blame.
Several fire departments from Greenwood County and Abbeville County responded to the fire.
Pictures from the scene appear to show that the steeple collapsed as a result of the fire.
The church will hold Sunday’s services at the education center on the church’s property.
