LAGRANGE, Ga. (AP) — Police in Georgia said they are looking for a man whose weapon was used by a 6-year-old child to accidentally shoot another child in the face.
A 4-year-old girl was found with a gunshot wound to her face after officers responded to a call at a LaGrange home on Monday, LaGrange Police said in a Facebook post. The girl was taken to a hospital and as of Monday night, she remains in critical condition.
Investigators found that Leemarkese Deangelo Melson, 28, had left out a loaded gun inside the home before the shooting, police said. The older child was playing with the gun before it accidentally fired and hit the younger child in the face, police said.
Police said Melson, who is a convicted felon and wanted for outstanding charges, took the weapon with him and fled the scene after the child was shot. A warrant has been issued for his arrest on charges including cruelty to a child and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
