GREENVILLE COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) – Greenville County Sheriff Hobart Lewis announced three people have been charged with murder in a 2014 cold case homicide.
The body of 19-year-old Marquail Marvista Hellams was found on January 31, 2014 on a gravel path off of Davis Road in Piedmont. Once deputies arrived on scene, they found Hellams had been shot multiple times.
Over seven years later, Sheriff Lewis said three people were arrested as of April 15, 2021 for Hellams’ murder.
Kris Thomas Capatino, 47, of Easley, has been charged with murder and criminal conspiracy.
Destany Maria Fields, 26, of Greenville, has been charged with murder and criminal conspiracy.
Rahiem Jarrard Griffin, 28, of Easley, has been charged with murder, criminal conspiracy and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
Sheriff Lewis said someone reported a tip through Crime Stoppers, which helped officers locate the suspect vehicle that was used during the murder. The vehicle was located on April 9, 2021 in Pickens County.
After further investigation, officers learned Griffin, Fields and Hellams were roommates at the time and went to meet up with Capatino on January 31, 2014. Everyone got into Capatino’s vehicle and he drove them the Davis Road area, where they shot Hellams outside of the vehicle, Sheriff Lewis said. Investigators believe there were previous issues between Hellams and his roommates, which motivated the murder.
Sheriff Lewis said Hellams thought they were going to make a narcotics purchase.
All three suspects were booked into the Greenville County Detention Center, where they are being held without bond.
