Daniel High School student killed in Pickens Co. crash

CENTRAL, S.C. (WSPA) — Troopers with the S.C. Highway Patrol say one teen was killed and another injured in a crash on Six Mile Highway.

Troopers say it happened around midnight Wednesday about two miles from Central.

Troopers say the 16-year-old driver ran off the left side of the road, hit a culvert and overturned.

A 17-year-old passenger was thrown from the car, troopers say. He was reportedly not wearing a seat belt.

Coroner Kandy Kelly identified the teen killed in the wreck as Dillon McCade Ridgeway of Six Mile.

Daniel High School says Ridgeway was an 11th grade student.

The driver was hurt and taken to a hospital, troopers say.

Daniel High School posted the following the Facebook:

We are extremely saddened to learn of the death of Dillon Ridgeway, an 11th grade student at Daniel High School. Dillon was enrolled in the Public Safety program at the Pickens County Career and Technology Center and had career goals of becoming a firefighter. He had a great sense of humor and was always able to put a smile on someone’s face. He will definitely be missed by his classmates, teachers, and staff. Our deepest sympathies are with the Ridgeway family and with everyone in our community who was close to Dillon.

Grief counselors will be available at the school on Monday morning and space will be provided for students needing time to grieve.
