Man dies after deputy-involved shooting on Gibson Oaks Dr. in Greer

GREER, S.C. (WSPA) – A man has died after a deputy-involved shooting on Gibson Oaks Drive Thursday evening near Greer.

According to the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office, the shooting happened around 5:00pm when deputies were attempting to serve a warrant for criminal sexual conduct.

Deputies said they identified the suspect after arriving at the home and, at some point, a shooting took place.

Sheriff Hobart Lewis said the suspect was taken to Greenville Memorial Hospital where he died.

The coroner identified the deceased suspect as 39-year-old William Clayton Blackwell, of Greer.

No deputies were hurt in the shooting.

All deputies involved will be placed on administrative leave pending an internal investigation, the sheriff’s office said.

The shooting is being investigated by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.
