McDowell Co., NC (WSPA) – A man is accused of putting a dog inside a bag and drowning it in a river.
The McDowell County Sheriff’s Office says Charles Travis Hollifield, 40, of Marion is charged with felony cruelty to animals.
Deputies say two fishermen found a pink camouflage drawstring bag floating in Catawba River at the Yancey Bridge on March 28. Inside they found the body of a dead Chihuahua mix.
A tip and investigation reportedly led them to Hollifield.
Deputies say the dog was named Princess and belongs to Hollifield’s wife.
The warrant alleges he drowned the dog by putting it in the bag with a rock and throwing it in the river.
PETA had offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.
