PICKENS COUNTY, SC (WSPA) – The Pickens County Sheriff’s Office confirmed a teen boy who was found dead on the shoulder of Saluda Dam Road over the weekend was shot.
According to a sheriff’s office news release, Robert Tyler Butler, 16, of Easley, died as a result of being shot with a small caliber weapon.
But Tyler’s girlfriend Zora Evans said she believes it was a robbery turned deadly.
“The two dudes that he was in the car with had his legs hanging out of the window when they pulled off in the car, and after they passed the stop sign I couldn’t see anymore and I heard a gunshot,” Evans said.
We reported earlier that the sheriff’s office received a call around 12:15 p.m. Saturday from a passing motorist about a suspicious person who appeared to be injured on the shoulder of Saluda Dam road near Pistol Club Road.
When deputies arrived on scene, they found Butler dead.
“He loved to have fun, I raced cars for a little while he helped with that and I coached him in football he was just overall fun to be around,” Robert Butler, Tyler’s dad, said.
According to a sheriff’s office news release, detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding Butler’s death.
“Please join us as we pray for Tyler’s family and friends as they attempt to understand and cope with this tragic and senseless loss of life,” Sheriff Rick Clark said. “Our hearts go out to each and every one of them as we remain focused on the mission at hand, which is to bring the person or persons responsible for his death to justice.”
Anyone who was in the area over the last 24 hours and noticed anything unusual or suspicious is asked to call the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office at 864-898-5500 or Crime Stoppers at 888-CRIME-SC.
“I just want justice for Tyler. He did not deserve this at all. It’s unfair to him,” Evans said.
