Elem. students thank firefighters battling Pinnacle Mt. Wildfire

PICKENS COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) – Elementary students are showing their appreciation for the firefighters battling the wildfire on Pinnacle Mountain.

Dozens of thank you cards are being sent to fire crews on scene. They include drawings and words of encouragement from Pickens County’s youngest students.

“It is amazing. I have never seen anything like it,” said Clay Cooper, Forestry Technician from Abbeville County. “I almost get emotional reading some of it. It means the community is behind us.”

The cards now hang in the dining hall where the Red Cross is feeding crews warm meals daily. Officials tell us the community support is helping them get through their long, tiresome work hours.

“I mean these guys are working 11, 12 hours a day on the mountain. It is dirty dangerous work. So just to know, that there is support out there,” Doug Wood, the Forestry Commission PIO, said. “People love this mountain, these mountains and this area and their support has just been overwhelming.”

Firefighters are taking many of the thank you cards home to make room for more expected to be delivered this week.
