SPARTANBURG, SC (WSPA) – Today the Spartanburg Police Department held a remembrance service to honor the life of fallen Master Patrol Officer Jason Harris.
He died 2 years ago from injuries suffered while responding to a burglary.
The ceremony, forced indoors due to rain, had few dry eyes the Police Chief placed a wreath next to a photo of him in uniform.
His mother, wife and grandmother were among a large group of family in attendence.
“Over this year, we’ve had a lot of people and a lot of support, and it just means a lot,” said his mother, Susan Harris.
Mrs. Harris says her son’s wife Amanda and two of their children, 8-year-old Alex, and nearly 12-year-old Samantha are now living across the street from her. The department helped them move.
His eldest daughter Madison just had a baby. Life for the Harris’s continues, but not without keeping Jason in their hearts.
“We have some flowers that Samantha bought recently and she’s waiting until tomorrow to put them on the grave,” said his mother.
Cheif Alonzo Thompson says this annual service is needed not just for his family, but his family in blue.
“It’s extremely important also for the police who are still working. Because it reminds us you will not be forgotten,” said Cheif Thompson.
The Spartanburg Police Department hadn’t suffered the loss of one of thier own for 55 years before officer Harris passed.
He was heading to an burglary call when he was thrown from his motorcycle during a crash.
Harris name can now be found on the Fallen Officer Memorial in Washington DC across from his great great grandfather, who served in York County.
“Always wanted to be a cop, always wanted to serve, he was a detention officer,” said his brother Adam Harris.
“He took criminal justice in college, He just always had that call to serve, that was him,” said his other brothe Chris Harris.
April 13 2017 may have been the end of Officer Harris’ watch, but to his family and this department, his lives on.
Officer Harris’ name and photo also appear in the south carolina hall of fame, along with his great great grandfather who died in the line of duty in 1932.
