Family loses home in fire, receives surprise from Academy Sports

UNION, SC (WSPA) – After a local family lost everything in a fire last week, one area business decided to pitch in to help them out.

The Dunnaway’s home on Pulpwood Yard Road in Jonesville caught on fire on March 5 and was destroyed.

On Tuesday, Academy Sports and Outdoors surprised the family with Magellan Outdoors fishing apparel, as well as gave the family a $750 gift card to help the family replace some of the items they lost in fire.

The family’s son, Kyle, is on the Broome High School Bass Fishing Team and participates in the Palmetto Boat Center’s High School Fishing Trail.

Academy Sports and Outdoors, a partner of the event, found out about the family’s loss through that partnership and decided to help.

The family told us they were surprised and thankful for Academy Sports’ gift, as well as for others in the community who have come forward to help them through this difficult time.

“It really means a lot, you know, because a little family like we are and this big ole company like Academy, and that they think about us just because I fish, is big for us and real thankful from all of us,” Kyle Dunnaway said.

Academy Sports’ Regional Marketing Specialist Liza Barrett said, “The fishing community in general, they had a lot of people kind of coming together and so we decided to just join in. They are here, they are local to this store and we would love to be able to do something to help them out.”
