Federal charges brought against Seth Pickering after death of daughter

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WSPA)—-A federal grand jury announced Wednesday that federal indictment charges have been brought against a man who is accused of killing his 6-year-old daughter.

Seth Pickering, 36, of Leicester, NC, was arrested on state charges on September 9th for his daughter’s murder and on September 13th a criminal complaint was filed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, charging him with one count of first degree murder.

Seth Pickering is currently in federal custody. He is scheduled to be in court, Wednesday.

The penalty for first-degree murder is life in prison or death. The Department of Justice has not announced whether it will seek the death penalty.

Lila was a 1st grade student at Johnston Elementary School. Buncombe County Schools Superintendent Dr.

Tony Baldwin says, “While many questions have yet to be answered, our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by the heartbreaking loss of this wonderful little girl.”

“We will have crisis support teams on hand Monday morning at Johnston Elementary School to help students, teachers, and staff come to grips with this senseless tragedy,” added Baldwin, “They will remain for as long as they are needed.”
