Fmr. Campobello mayor dies month after resignation


SPARTANBURG Co., S.C. (WSPA) — Campobello town officials announced former Mayor Ray Copeland died Monday night. 

Copeland, 95, resigned last month for health reasons. 

Prior to serving as mayor for 12 years, Copeland was on Campobello Town Council for about 20 years. He also served as Postmaster of Campobello for many years. 

The Town of Campobello released the following statement on his passing:

In his decades of serving, Mayor Copeland always had the best interest of the town and its resident as his chief concern and priority. He was a man dedicated to service, friends and family.”

Funeral arrangements have been announced.

First Baptist Church of Campobello

10 a.m. Family will receive friends.

11 a.m. Funeral service

Spartanburg County Voter Registration and Elections previously said Copeland resigned for medical issues effective Sept. 4. 

A special election will be held to elect a mayor on Dec. 4.
