CLAYTON, N.C. (AP) – A former North Carolina cheerleading coach is facing several charges in connection with a sexual relationship with an underage girl during a string of incidents dating back to 2016.

Johnston County authorities say 23-year-old Jacob Alan Parton has been charged with statutory rape and indecent liberties with a child.

Officials say Parton worked as a coach at Premier Athletics in Clayton, part of a national chain that trains cheerleaders, gymnasts, dancers. Court records show the encounters began in March 2016, when the girl was 13.

Sheriff’s Capt. Jeff Caldwell says the girl’s mother is also facing charges because she knew of the relationship but did not report it to authorities.

Parton is expected to go on trial next week. It wasn’t known if he had an attorney.
