CHEROKEE Co., SC (WSPA) – The death of a man who was stabbed in the chest at his home and died more than a week later has been ruled a homicide, according to Cherokee Co. Coroner Dennis Fowler.
Brandon Duvail Thomas, 33, was taken to the hospital with a stab wound to the upper left chest.
He was discharged on Oct 27, but was re-admitted the next day with difficulty breathing.
He was pronounced brain dead at 4:05 p.m. on Oct. 29.
The coroner says Thomas died from infectious complications from the stab wound.
His wife, Ashley Thomas, is currently charged with attempted murder, but the sheriff said charges are likely to be upgraded soon.
She is still in custody at the Cherokee Co. Detention Center.
Sheriff Steve Mueller said the wife drove him to the hospital and stayed there after the incident.
“This was a couple that lived in the home together and there was some type of argument and then ultimately he was stabbed. She drove him to the hospital,” Mueller said.
Mueller said there were no reports of ongoing issues at the couple’s home.
“It’s domestic violence – no matter how you say it, what the history is whether it’s the first instance or there’s been a hundred instances,” said Mueller. “This is another classic case in South Carolina where a person loses their life as a result of domestic violence. It’s not always male on female. In this case it’s female on male.”
