GAFFNEY, S.C. (WSPA) — A fire sent a Gaffney house up in flames and claimed the lives of several pets while the homeowners were out of town.

Gaffney Fire Department responded to the blaze near Grubb and 12th streets early Thursday morning. Firefighters were still knocking out hot spots several hours later.

Gaffney Fire Chief Jamie Caggiano said no one was hurt.

He said the house was unoccupied at the time.

Firefighters say the people who live there were in Charleston, but five pets did perish in the fire.

The fire was under investigation as of Thursday morning.
