Greenville P.D. hosts “Cops on the Court” open gym

GREENVILLE, SC (WSPA)  – Greenville Police Officers are trading their patrol uniforms for basketball jerseys Tuesday night. It’s all part of the Cops on the Court program, aimed at creating a stronger bond with the community.

The weekly games started two years ago, when officers started playing basketball with kids and teens in Pleasant Valley. The program expanded to Nicholtown, and now the Greenville Police Department is hoping to add more neighborhoods to the program.

Greenville P.D. is hosting an open gym night at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena to try to reach more people in the Greenville community, and to continue to build positive relationships with the kids and teens in our area.

“That’s the age group that matters. That’s the age group that’s in school now, and they’re learning from every situation that they’re in,” says Officer Johnathan Bragg. “They’re learning from every interaction they come across with teachers, with law enforcement, with people of power I guess you could say. So they are really the most important age group to focus on. They’re our future.”

The open gym will go from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Kids ages 8-12 will have the court from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and teens ages 13-17 will have the court from 6 p..m to 9 p.m. A waiver must be signed by a parent so a child can participate in the event.
