Greer athlete’s brother shot, killed in Orlando massacre

GREER, SC (WSPA) — Stanley Almodovar III was one of 49 people killed in the Orlando massacre.

His sister, Amanda Almodovar, competes with Rockstar Cheer Greenville in Greer.

Instead of attending practice Wednesday, she spent the day in Orlando — mourning the loss of her older brother and planning his funeral.

Gym owner and Rockstar Cheer coach, Scott Foster, says he talks to the 15-year-old athlete every day.

“I got a text message from Amanda saying she wouldn’t be at practice,” Foster said as he recalled Sunday morning.

Soon later, he would learn Stanley was at Pulse nightclub at the time of the attack.

“They didn’t know if he was alive or dead.  The next communication was he didn’t make it,” Foster said.

Amanda lives in Tennessee and travels more than three hours, each way, to Rockstar Cheer Greenville.

The tight-knit team competes at an incredibly high level.  In April, the group won bronze at the World Championship in Orlando.

It’s a city that once held so much joy for the young athlete.  Now — tarnished with confusion and heartbreak.

A GoFundMe page has been set up for the Almodovar family.  As of Wednesday evening, the amount raised is $1,000 shy of the overall goal.
