UPDATE AS OF 8/1/2018 5:50PM

In Transylvania County, North Carolina more than two dozen people are sick and health officials don’t know why.
Most started showing up in the emergency room on Sunday night with symptoms of nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
Multiple backgrounds, multiple restaurants and tons of comments on social media, leaves more questions than answers for those who live and eat in this area.
Health officials don’t know what caused the illness and they don’t know where it came from.
For June Varas, this recent virus in Transylvania County hit close to home. The maintenance man in her community got sick. June says ” found out today that he also has the gastrointestinal virus.”
That’s how health officials are labeling the sickness, until the test come back.
People started flooding into the hospital emergency room on Sunday looking for medical  treatment.
Tara Rybka is the Health Educator and Public Information Officer of Transylvania Public Health, she says, “our nurses started going through the process of contacting all those folks who had presented to the emergency department.
Following up with them to get a history of what they had eaten, where they had been any other sick people they’ve been in contact with.”
One of Tara’s responsibilities is to keep the public informed and while they’re still gathering information, they have yet to pinpoint the cause, Tara says, “at this point we’re still waiting on lab results to find out what the actual disease is”
Those who got sick ate at different restaurants, we even saw service master cleaning a local eatery.
As for June, her grand children love to eat out and while she’s concerned, she knows a sickness could come from anywhere.
June says, “it could be just a gastrointestinal virus going around. People touch door knobs, they touch the shopping carts”
So she’ll be mindful to wash her hands and use sanitizer whenever possible.
The Transylvania Public Health Department will have test results in a few days.
This will give them a better idea of what they’re dealing with and how to treat it.
