Heavy rains cause landslides, bridge collapse in WNC

LAKE LURE, NC (WSPA) – Heavy rains in western North Carolina Saturday night and early Sunday morning caused landslides and a bridge collapse.

According to the Fairfield Mountains Fire Department, a bridge along Gateway Drive in Lake Lure collapsed during the heavy rain.

The road is closed indefinitely from Mountain Boulevard to Fern Loop.

The fire department says a pedestrian walkway was also damaged and closed.

A landslide also caused the closure of Old Fort Road in Buncombe County, according to Broad River Fire and Rescue.

One lane remains closed on Old Fort Road, according to the department.
