CLEMSON, SC (WSPA) – An iconic theater in downtown Clemson will reopen next year as the city and county’s first brewery.
“Well I remember watching Star Wars there or going on the first date with my wife in that movie theater that’s the cool part about this building is all the memories made here,” said Paul Cain who is co-owner of the new brewery.
For over 30 years, Astro III’s doors were open to serve the Clemson community as a movie theater, but for the last decade the building has sat empty in the center of downtown.
But now three men have come up with plans to turn it into Magnetic South Brewing.
” We want to embody all the things that keep people coming back to South or visiting the South or moving to the South,” said Tanner Coombs who is a co-owner of the new brewery.
While they are still compiling the plans and applying for permits, the owners hope to keep the history alive while bringing people back to the community who have memories from decades before.
“We have a lot of the old seats still here and we are going to try to find a way to incorporate those into the bar or as waiting seating, we are going to try to get a projector screen that will drop down to show big games and have movie nights,” said Adam Willier who is co-owner.
The owners hope to turn one of the theaters into a restaurant so there are options for food at the new business.
The whole project itself will cost several million dollars and the hope if everything goes well is to open in the spring of 2020, with construction starting later this year.
