Household hacks to save you time and money

GUILFORD, Conn. (WTNH) – Most of us turn to our wallets when we need to do something around the house but you may be able to stretch your dollar further by using items you already have in your home. A home improvement expert showed us three household hacks you may be able to do right now.

Starting with dryer sheets. You’ll spend $2-$3 bucks on dryer sheets and home improvement experts say you can stretch your dollar on them well beyond the laundry room. Dryer sheets are not just for doing laundry anymore.

Danny Lipford, home improvement expert and host of “Today’s Homeowner with Danny Lipford,” says they are one of the most useful tools you can have around the house.

“They have an anti-static property to them that allows you to clean things that will really repel the dust for a quite a while, electronics, back of TVs, back of your stereo system and so-forth,” Lipford said.

Use them to clean electronics, your blinds, to polish your faucets, even collect dust from above, on ceiling fans, before it gets into the air by attaching it to a paint roller!

“If you have some of those upper windows, really tall windows, you can also reach the window seals on those, then you can use that to clean just about anything you want.”

Then there’s a pool noodle, not just for swimming. Attach it to the wall of your garage to keep your car door from scuffing it, cut it up and attach it to sharp edges to prevent injury, or just make your life a little easier when you’re trying to fill a bucket of water.

Lipford says you can save yourself a lot of money by looking around your home for hacks like these before just buying something new. Another good one is vinegar:

“White vinegar can be used to clean just about anything. It’s great for deodorizing, great to mix with a 50/50 ratio of water and be able to wash all of your windows, any glass you have in your house. That’s cheaper than the blue stuff in the bottle that you buy,” he said.

There are a lot of ways to clean or make life easier that are available and can save you a lot of money along the way.
