How to find out if you may be owed class action money

You may be owed money and not even know it. Right now there are a number of class action settlements that involve millions of people. And if you don’t claim your cash within the time limit, it’s gone.

We looked into how you can track down those lawsuits and apply for cash you deserve.

A few years back Cynthia Lee in Spartanburg says she was getting harassing calls at home, at work, even to her family from a mortgage servicing company.

Green Tree Servicing was eventually charged with illegal debt collection practices and owes $63 million in a class action settlement.

And today she has a check from that settlement because she took the time to file a claim more than 2 years ago.

“After I noticed and read about the tactics that they were using that was something that I was being violated with so then when I seen that they had a link to the page where you could sign up, I then did that, and this is the result of it,” she said.

She wants to keep the amount private, but is open about the importance of following up with settlement notices in the mail, your email even the newspaper.

Attorney Gary Poliakoff says many people don’t.

“A lot of times there is money left on the table because the offending company, that is whatever company found to owe this money either by having defrauded people or charged something illegal, a lot of times if enough claims aren’t filed there’s a windfall given back to the offending company,” said Poliakoff.

So how long do you have to claim your money? Sometimes the time limit’s only 60-90 days. If you have to show proof it will be a little longer. The point is, know your deadline. has a list of more than 85 settlements with an claims period that is currently open. It includes everything from American Express, to HSBC Bank to Tresemme. You’ll find the deadline, estimated payback and links to file a claim.

“Be proactive with it, then you’ll get the results you deserve,” said Lee, check in hand.

It took years for Lee to get her money, and that’s not uncommon. So if you do file, know that it won’t be quick cash, but no matter when the money comes, you’ll likely be happy to see it.
