There’s a new way to make more money when you’re selling your home by cutting out the middle man, but still getting some help.

Owners.com is offering a service to people who sell by owner that allows them to put their house on the coveted MLS listing that goes out to realtors and sites like Zillow.

Marie Dunn-Blough just listed her North Main Street area home in Greenville last week. She’s chosen to do it herself because she has the time to show the home, and also wouldn’t mind saving on the selling agent commission. For her $390,000 house at 104 E. MontClair, that could be a savings of nearly $12,000.

And she’s confident.

“We’ve had nonstop showings honestly, for the past week since I’ve listed,” she said.

She says if it doesn’t sell fast, she may look into using the new service at Owners.com

For $395 you get your house on the MLS listing, and for $695 you also can call their brokers for advice anytime for up to a year.

Still one of the biggest downfalls to listing without an realtor is you may not price the house correctly. That could leave it on the market for longer, which is something the buyers make note of, so realtors recommend you do your homework.

Realtor Haro Setian with The Haro Group, which is associated with Keller Williams, says selling your home without a realtor can also put you in a tight spot when you have to negotiate a contract.

“Keeping the contract together is really one of the big challenges in this process because it’s every conversation you have the potential if you’re representing yourself of being emotional, it’s like being in a courtroom without an attorney defending you,” he said.

Still if Dunn-Bough can pull it off, she’d rather pay herself the commission.

BUYING:

Buyers can save through the Owners.com service, too.

If you use one of their brokers, they won’t be able to show up in person but they will do just about everything else like negotiate contracts and review paperwork.

The only sticking point, is they can only help you with houses that are listed on their site.

If you use them, they will refund you half of the standard commission, so you really only pay them about 1.5%.

Owners.com says they can charge less, because they are salaried, and cut costs by not having to be on location.
