UPDATE: All westbound lanes of Interstate 26 have since reopened after a tractor trailer overturned early Friday morning.

BUNCOMBE COUNTY, NC (WSPA) – A portion of Interstate 26 westbound near Asheville remains closed after a tractor trailer overturned and blocked both lanes early Friday morning.

According North Carolina Highway Patrol Master Trooper Murico Stephens, troopers responded to the crash at mile marker 35 near Long Shoals Road at 3:30 a.m.

Stephens said the tractor trailer, which was carrying wood chips, was traveling westbound on I-26 when it went of the right side of the road and hit a guardrail.

The tractor trailer then reportedly overturned and landed in the road, blocking both westbound lanes of the interstate.

The driver of the tractor trailer was not injured and no other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Stephens said just after 7:30 a.m. Friday that the westbound lanes were still closed as crews worked to remove the tractor trailer from the road.

According to NCDOT, a detour had been set up in the area.
