REYKJAVIK, Iceland (AP) – Iceland’s president has started an international controversy — about pizza.
When he was addressing some school kids last week, the president (Gudni Th. Johannesson) disclosed his opposition to pineapple on pizza. Icelandic media reported that he said he’d ban the fruity topping if he could.
It proved his most controversial statement since he took up the largely ceremonial post last year. His comments caused such a social-media storm that he finally released a statement on Facebook, stressing that he does not have the power to ban pizza toppings, and is “glad that I do not hold such power.” But he did add that, at least for him, the best topping is seafood.
