GREENVILLE, S.C. (WSPA) – A 57-year-old man is dead after police say a car hit him as he crossed Woodruff Road.

The accident happened just south of Verdae Boulevard and Roper Mountain Road, near Carrabba’s Italian Grill and Costco.

Greenville police say a call came in just before 8 p.m. Tuesday.

The coroner’s office identified the victim as 57-year-old Gary Wayne Hickman of Ardoch, North Dakota.

Police say Hickman was hit by at least one vehicle while running across the road.

7News is told two cars were likely involved in the accident, and a third vehicle might be involved as well, although that car was not at the scene of the accident when officers arrived.

According to the coroner’s office, Hickman was walking down an embankment from a retail shopping center when he walked into the path of a dark-colored Chevrolet Trailblazer.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials believe Hickman was here in the area for work. They said he was likely staying at a hotel in the parking lot he was running to.

Woodruff Road closed for just over two hours while officers reconstructed the accident.

This accident is still under investigation.
