Incident at Perry Correctional resolved says SLED

PELZER, SC (WSPA) – There has been an incident at Perry Correctional after an inmate hurt an officer, according Clark Newsom, head of communications at the SC Dept. of Corrections.

DOC and SLED say the incident was resolved shortly after 5 p.m.

The officer was released from the hospital on Monday.

The DOC Director said he was not releasing the officer’s name at this point.

He says “the community is not in jeopardy from the incident going on.”

We can see from Air 7 that tactical teams were outside a building this afternoon.

SLED says they were called to help assist the prison.

A source claiming to be an inmate inside the prison told 7News the hostage situation happened because the inmates are on lockdown nearly 24-7, and they get little to no recreation time. There were also allegations of attitudes, but it’s not clear if that was on the inmate or officer side.

Perry is a Level 3 prison for men. Level 3 means maximum security.

The prison houses 900 inmates. There were 180 in the dorm.
