Inmate death at Perry Correctional under investigation, SCDC officials say

PELZER, SC (WSPA) – South Carolina Department of Correctons officials confirmed an inmate died following a fight in a cell at Perry Correctional Institution early Monday morning.

According to a SCDC news release, Carl Andrew Pollen, Jr., 45, of Pelzer, was injured during a fight in his cell with another inmate at around 2 a.m. Monday.

Pollen reportedly died about an hour later.

Greenville County Coroner Kent Dill said an autopsy revealed that Pollen died from blunt force head trauma and his manner of death was deemed a homicide.

Both South Carolina Department of Corrections Police Services and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division are investigating Pollen’s death.

Pollen was in Perry Correctional serving a life sentence for a murder conviction out of Horry County.
