Inmate dies in hospital after found unresponsive in Spartanburg Co. jail

SPARTANBURG COUNTY, SC (WSPA) – The Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office and State Law Enforcement are investigating an inmate death at the Spartanburg County Jail.

According to a coroner’s office news release, the coroner’s office was called Monday evening just before 10 p.m. in regards to the death of Kimberly Renee Sexton, 38. 

Sexton had reportedly been incarcerated at the jail since May 24 and was found unresponsive Monday evening.

EMS was called and Sexton was taken to Spartanburg Medical Center just after 9:40 p.m. and was pronounced dead around 9:50 p.m.

According to the coroner’s office, our initial exam did not reveal any trauma, but an autopsy has been ordered.

The coroner’s office said it is following up with toxicology and will await the pathological findings for a cause of death.
