LAURENS, SC (WSPA) – A Laurens Co. Detention Center employee was fired and arrested after she was accused of sexual misconduct with an inmate.
Stephanie Nelson, 38, is charged with First Degree Sexual Misconduct with an inmate.
The sheriff’s office says they launched an investigation earlier this week after reviewing security camera footage.
Investigators say Nelson’s and the inmate’s movement were concerning, so they notified the sheriff.
They conducted an investigation and gathered enough evidence to charge Nelson, according to the release.
Sheriff Don Reynolds said Nelson was fired on the spot.
She was booked at the detention center and had a bond hearing Wednesday afternoon.
“The public should know that I am holding each of these Deputies personally responsible for their actions. I will not tolerate criminal behavior from anyone, especially our own Deputies. This county jail is as good for one person as it is another, especially those that we entrust to uphold ethics, standards, and professional practices,” said Sheriff Reynolds,
