Peter Mayer, lead guitarist of Jimmy Buffet’s Coral Reefer Band, is performing in Hendersonville on Friday to help a local charity.
Mayer is a Nashville artist who has been playing with Buffett for 30 years. He has his own touring band and has released 30 albums, and has also played on stage with James Taylor, Ringo Starr, Don Henley and Joe Walsh.
His concert “A Junkman’s Christmas” features Christmas carols, original songs and stories about his career and childhood in India with his missionary parents. It will feature a world-class band and a wide range of musical styles, from jazz to classical.
“It means a lot to me growing up, son of a pastor for so many years to be playing in churches and sharing joyful music of the season,” Mayer says. “I think in a world that needs a lot of healing, it makes my job purposeful and it’s healing for me as well.”
Mayer is currently touring with Coral Reefer Band and says Jimmy Buffett is still going strong at 72 years old. “He’s kind of taught me a sense of humor,” Mayer says. “In fact, one of his favorite quotes is ‘terror is the absence of humor.'”
The concert is part of Mayer’s annual Stars and Promises tour. He performs Friday at the Grace Lutheran Church in Hendersonville from 7 to 9 PM.
Tckets are $30 dollars and all proceeds will go to Hendersonville’s Interfaith Assistance Ministry, which helps local families in financial crisis.
