LAURENS Co., SC (WSPA) – Laurens Co. School District 55 and 56 will be closed on Thursday Oct. 11 due to Hurricane Michael.

They say the National Weather Service has put Laurens Co. in the Tropical Storm Warning zone and they expect winds from 39 – 73 mph, according to Ed Murray with District 55.

Murray says any winds over 30 mph are hazardous for buses and the possibility of flash floods would make it too dangerous to transport children.

Dr. Stephen Peters said, “We do not like to miss a day of instruction but student and staff safety is our first priority. Hurricane Michael represents a serious threat to our area and, while its magnitude may still be uncertain, our need to prepare for the potential consequences is paramount.”

Games and after school events will be canceled or postponed for both school districts on Thursday.

Laurens District 56 has also canceled events on Wednesday.
