UNION Co., S.C. (WSPA) — Monarch Fire Department says lightning stuck Tabernacle Baptist Church on Monday.
Firefighters say there was a fire in the roof of the building.
Dr. Tommy Vaughn, interim pastor of Tabernacle Baptist Church, says lightning hit the back corner of the sanctuary roof where the sanctuary meets the education building.
He said fire could have quickly engulfed the area and credits the quick actions of church members and first responders with preventing what could have been destructive.
Dr. Vaughn said the alarm was set off after the lightning strike. The ministry assistant was in the church and notified a member who found the fire in the attic space. Dr. Vaughn said the church member also works on the church’s heating and air conditioning unit and knew how to quickly access that area.
The church will hold services at the regular times. They will use the family life center if they are unable to worship in the sanctuary.
