Food and art are all on display at Spring Fling in downtown Spartanburg.

Hub City Bookshop is hoping they can bring in a new set of readers to their store this weekend.

The bookstore started the day with a Mimosa for everyone who bought a book.
Giveaways like that and shopping sales helped create buzz for Independent Bookstore Day.

Jacquelyn Lancaster works at Hub City, she says they were able to attract new shoppers during their event at Spring Fling.

Independent Bookstore Day puts the spotlight on local shops.

Lancaster says local bookstores help local authors and local readers.

“We are here and we care about them and we are publishing books and selling books that are going to be appealing to them,” Lancaster said.

She also says competition can be tough going up against online and big retailers, but she has faith that people will never give up on their neighborhood book shop.

“When they realize what we are supporting and who we are supporting usually they are more willing to help us out and come shop here,” Lancaster said.
