ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WSPA) – A New York firefighter died after a tree fell and hit a vehicle Friday afternoon at Biltmore Estate.

According to Biltmore Estate officials, during a weather event with strong winds, a tree fell across a road at the estate entrance and hit a guest vehicle. Three adults and one child were in the car and were transported to Mission Hospital.

Buncombe County EMS, Asheville Fire Department and Biltmore onsite teams responded to the incident, officials said. One adult died from their injuries.

The Freeport Fire Department, located in Freeport, N.Y., identified the victim as Casey Skudin. He was a decorated veteran of the Fire Department of the City of New York, FDNY.

FDNY told 7NEWS Skudin’s death was a “terrible tragedy and loss to his family and the FDNY. The Fire Dept. will support FF Skudin’s family and colleagues through this challenging time.”

An investigation is underway.
