SPARTANBURG, S.C. (WSPA) – A single-car crash killed a retired fireman Wednesday morning in Spartanburg County.
According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the crash happened at 11:10 a.m. just south of Spartanburg along Highway 56.
Trooper said a 2006 Ford pickup was traveling east on SC 26 when it went off the right side of the road and hit two utility poles.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office said 58-year-old Charles Edward Watson, II, died from his injuries shortly before 11:30 a.m.
According to the Spartanburg Fire Department, Watson was a Lieutenant at the department. He served from February 1990 to October 2011 for the first time.
The fire department said he returned to serve from October of 2011 to April 2014 when he fully retired as a Lieutenant for Hillcrest Station 5.
South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
