OCONEE COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) – A 7-year-old girl was flown to the hospital after she was shot Thursday afternoon in Oconee County.

The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office said they were called to a home on Taylor Road just before 3:30 p.m. for a shooting.

Deputies responded to the scene to find the girl with a gunshot wound to the upper torso. She was then flown to an area hospital for her injuries.

Due to the investigation, Master Deputy Jimmy Watt said they are unable to tell 7News how she was shot or who had the gun.

“That is still once again, trying to piece together everything that happened, it’s still a part of the investigation that is currently going on,” Watt said.

Family members told 7NEWS the girl is in stable condition and is preparing for a second surgery.

Investigators said they believe the shooting was accidental.

As this seven-year-old continues to recover, officials are asking everyone to remember her family.

“We just ask for your viewers, our citizens and the public, to keep this young girl and her family in your prayers as she continues to recover,” Watt said.

The sheriff’s office is continuing to gather evidence to investigate the shooting.
