HAYWOOD CO., NC (WSPA) – Officials say all four lanes of Interstate 40 near the Tennessee state line will be reopened before sunrise, Wednesday morning.
The lanes had been closed since a landslide on February 22.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation says a contractor was wrapping up final tasks Tuesday afternoon.
The landslide put rocks, dirt, and other debris on the interstate, shutting down all four lanes of I-40 for five days and sending drivers on a nearly 50-mile detour.
Crews removed more than 10,000 tons of debris, installed rock anchors and wire mesh, and built a retaining wall.
The final work consisted of crews pouring a new concrete median and resurfacing the road.
