Police chase leads to deadly crash on US-29 in Spartanburg Co.

WELLFORD, SC (WSPA) – Two people have died and one person is injured after a crash in Wellford that happened on Wednesday night.

The crash happened along US-29 near Locust St. According to Wellford Police Chief David Green, the vehicle was part of a traffic stop for reckless driving. The driver drove off and a chase began.

Police were calling off the chase when it reached US-29, according to Chief Green.

According to South Carolina Highway Patrol, the crash happened when the driver of a 2017 Dodge Charger was traveling south on US- 29 attempting to elude law enforcement. A 2007 Jeep Commander was exiting a driveway when the Dodge hit the Jeep.

Troopers say both vehicles then caught fire.

The driver of the Dodge was thrown from the vehicle, injured and taken to a hospital.

The passenger of the Dodge, 25-year-old Kenneth James Heavner, died after being thrown from the vehicle..

The driver of the Jeep, 61-year-old Charles Rickman Stepp, also died as a result of the crash.

Wellford Police, Duncan Police and the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office responded to the incident. The crash remains under investigation by South Carolina Highway Patrol.
