Large fire burns recycled fabric bales at Spartanburg Co. business

SPARTANBURG CO., SC (WSPA) – Several fire departments responded to a large fire near a business along Simuel Road in Spartanburg County.

According to Westview-Fairforest Assistant Fire Chief Tracy Williams, the fire started as a grass fire around 5 p.m. Sunday near Simuel Road and Spring Street.

The fire spread to 300 large bales – each weighing 400-500 pounds – of recycled polyester fiber located in a fenced-in area across from Polysols.

Crews say the fire was under control by 7 p.m. Sunday.

No one was hurt in the fire and no buildings were damaged.

Williams said witnesses reported seeing juveniles running from the area of the grass fire and the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.

Spring Street was closed near the location of the fire.

Firefighters were expected to remain at the scene overnight.

As of Monday, the fire remains under investigation by the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office.

No arrests or suspect information has been released at this time.
