ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WPSA) – A mother and grandmother were charged with murder after a child’s body was found inside a hotel room Monday afternoon.

According to the Asheville Police Department, officers were dispatched to the Rodeway Inn and Suites on Crowell Road in West Asheville at about 3:10 p.m. for a welfare check.

When officers entered the room, they found a 3-year-old boy dead on the floor, according to the police department.

Lieutenant Russell Crisp, with the Asheville Police Department, says there is no good way to describe the scene they saw.

“It was just a very horrific and heart wrenching scene for anybody who went to the scene or was involved. You know, the forensic team, or anybody who views the photographs or video taken of the scene, it’s just absolutely terrible,” said Lieutenant Crisp.

Police arrested Chantarica Nasha Matthews, 29, of Gastonia, and Inga Torrence Matthews, 50, of Gastonia, on the scene.

Investigators said the child appeared to be extremely malnourished.

“The child, the victim, appeared very malnourished, very skinny, it did not appear he had been cared for,” said Lieutenant Crisp.

Both women were charged with first-degree murder, felony child abuse and concealment of death.

They are being held in the Buncombe County Detention Center. Each has a $95,000 bond on the felony child abuse and concealment of death charge and no bond on the first-degree murder charge.

Lieutenant Crispy says they’re actively investigating to see if anyone else was involved.

“We have a lot of information, search warrants that we’re trying to get executed to develop more information, to paint a little bit of a better picture as to what happened. So, this ongoing investigation is taking up a lot of time, but it is well-deserved for the victim,” he said.

He says an autopsy is scheduled for later this week to determine the cause of death of the young boy.

“All life is precious and whenever this involves a child, this young of age, this situation is just a horrific incident,” said Lieutenant Crisp.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Asheville Police Department at (828) 252-1110.
