GREENVILLE COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) – A man was found dead in the parking lot of Goodwill Tuesday morning in Greenville County.

According to the Greenville Police Department, officers responded to Goodwill located at 3214 Augusta Street at 6:32 a.m. in reference to a complainant observing a vehicle with a man inside with what appeared to be blood.

Once officers arrived on the scene, they located a man in the vehicle with a gunshot wound.

“As soon as I saw the car, my heart dropped. I was like, there ain’t no way,” said Si’Quan Henry, local pastor and friend of the victim.

According to the Greenville County Coroner’s Office, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim has been identified as 26-year-old Jonathan Mejia, of Spartanburg.

As investigators surveyed the scene Tuesday morning, nearby residents gathered across the parking lot and watched as a familiar face was taken away.

“I just talked to him a couple of days ago,” said Henry.

Henry said the news came as a shock.

“My mom called me and said Si’Quan, I think one of your friends just got shot and I was like, again?”

While nearby residents mourned the loss, people said crime in the area is rising.

“It hurts; it really hurts. But this should help people know that we gotta start living right. It’s time to start living right because death is starting to happen a lot. Death is starting to happen every day in Greenville. What are y’all doing? Does everybody want to die? No! Everybody needs to be at peace. Put down the guns,” said Henry.

Henry said he hopes people will realize the value of life before another one is lost.

“We are all losing hope and losing praise in what we are supposed to be doing. There ain’t nothing wrong with praising Jesus. There ain’t nothing wrong with being peaceful. There ain’t nothing wrong with doing the right thing,” said Hendy.

This case remains under investigation.
