10/18 Update: The Anderson County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Deputy Nicholas Posey was terminated on Wednesday due to a policy violation. He was employed at the sheriff’s office since March 2023 and previously worked as an SRO with the Anderson Police Department.

ANDERSON COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) – The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating an incident between a school resource officer and a student.

The Anderson County Sheriff’s Office confirmed on Tuesday SLED is investigating what it called an incident between a resource officer at an Anderson County School and a student.

Kyle Newton, chief communications officer for Anderson School District 5 said the SRO worked at Westside High School.

The district was informed by the sheriff’s office of investigation this week and the officer was not at school Monday. He said the investigation was the result of an alleged inappropriate relationship between the officer and a student.

The high school has two school resources officers, and while the investigation is ongoing, Newton said the sheriff’s office will provide another officer to work at the school.

The family of the victim is being represented by the Strom Law Firm who said “Let’s be clear, SRO officers are there to defend our children. So to have them violate that trust and become the very predators they’re supposed to be protecting our children from is beyond troubling,” said Bakari Sellers. “But then to have the school district make public comments to the media without ever reaching out to the victim’s family is pouring salt in the wound.”

The law firm goes on to say the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office contacted the victim’s family last week before the investigation was handed over to SLED.

The law firm said the family has been and will continue to fully cooperate.

The SRO has been placed on administrative leave while SLED conducts its investigation.
