Baby killed, firefighter burned in house fire in Spartanburg

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (WSPA) – A young child died and a firefighter was burned in a house fire Friday morning in Spartanburg.

The Spartanburg Fire Department responded to the home on Arch Street around 9:30am.

A child was trapped inside of the home and died at the scene, according to the fire department.

The Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office identified the child as one-and-a-half year old Lalia Cartee.

A firefighter suffered burns to his back while searching the front room of the home, the department said.

That firefighter was treated and released from the hospital.

Spartanburg Fire Marshal William Smart said there were five kids and two adults inside the home at the time of the fire.

There is no word yet on the cause of the fire. The fire is believed to have started in one of the front rooms of the home, according to the fire marshal.

The Spartanburg Police Department, South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, the State Fire Marshal’s Office, and the Spartanburg Fire Marshal are investigating the fire.
