GREENVILLE COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) – One person was arrested after deputies said they stole a vehicle and kidnapped a baby Tuesday morning in Greenville County.

According to the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded at 7:01 a.m. to 1410 Buncombe Road in reference to an incident where a vehicle was stolen with an under one-year-old inside.

Deputies said the vehicle and toddler were later found on Buncombe Road and Old Buncombe road, where the vehicle was involved in a crash.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol said the driver of a Chevy SUV, with a child inside, collided with a Ford transit van.

“He just got the soda from there and when he ran over here at the register, she took the van,” said a clerk at the gas station where the car was taken. “She stole the van with the kid.”

Deputies said 34-year-old Rebecca Ann Wells is being charged with kidnapping and grand larceny.

Wells ran from the scene but was later arrested, according to the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office.

Troopers said Wells is also charged with leaving the scene of a collision and disregarding a traffic signal.

The toddler was taken to the hospital to be checked out, with no injuries.

Wells is currently at the hospital being treated for an unrelated incident.

The Greenville County Detention Center said a temporary bond for Wells has been set.
