ANDERSON COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) – A Virginia man accused of killing his wife was arrested Monday morning in Anderson County.

According to the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office, deputies found Jose Hernandez Mejia, 49, on Interstate 85.

Deputies said Mejia’s wife, Evelin Molina, was found dead in their house on Sunday in Fairfax County, Virginia.

Mejia told a family member that he stabbed Molina, the sheriff’s office said.

“He contacted a family member, he asked his family member to come to the scene and explained to the family member that he had just stabbed his wife,” Fairfax County Police Lieutenant Dan Spital said.

Mejia has been charged with second-degree murder.

The Anderson County Sheriff’s Office said it’s a relief knowing he’s behind bars.

“So, if before 9:30 in the morning, they can take someone who is that violent and that extreme off the streets, and not only that, but work with another agency like SLED,” Anderson County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Shale Remien said. “Whether it was on the highway or whether he was going to the gas station next door and protect people in that regard. We have no idea what could’ve happened had he not gotten off the streets.”

He is currently being held in the Anderson County Detention Center waiting to be extradited back to Virginia.
