Longtime Spartanburg Regional president Charlie Boone dies at 90

SPARTANBURG, SC (WSPA) – The longtime president of Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System, Charlie Boone, has died at the age of 90, according to the hospital system.

Boone, Chief Operating Officer at previously Duke University Hospital, started work at Spartanburg General in the mid-1960’s when the hospital was in a financial crisis.

“There were no ceiling tiles,” Boone said of the building. “Pipes were exposed in the corridors.”

Boone is also credited with helping open the University of South Carolina – Spartanburg (now USC Upstate) and its nursing program.

Charlie Boone retired from the hospital system in 1995, after three decades of growth turning Spartanburg General into Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Boone died at the Spartanburg Regional Hospice which he helped create.

A memorial service will be held Friday, April 27 at 11:00am at Central United Methodist Church, a visitation will be held after the service.

A private graveside service will be held at a later date.
