TARBORO, N.C. (WNCN) – A 25-year-old man has been charged in the deaths of a Edgecombe County mayor and his wife, Sheriff Clee Atkinson said.
Gary Skelton and his wife Jackie were found dead on their property in Leggett after deputies responded to a welfare check at that address.
The Skeltons had been shot to death, Atkinson said.
“We were able to solve this double-homicide in less than eight hours,” Atkinson said.
Two suspects were taken into custody following the discovery of the Skelton’s bodies.
Keith Earl Williams, 25, of Tarboro, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder.
He’s being held at the Edgecombe County Detention Center.
A second person is being held on unrelated charges, Atkinson said.
A motive for the killings was not released.
Leggett town commissioner Teresa Summerlin she was concerned when Jackie Skelton didn’t show up for work Thursday morning. She tried to call Gary Skelton, but didn’t get an answer.
Summerlin said the Skeltons were last seen Wednesday night when they went out to dinner with another couple.
“They would have given them the shirt off their back,” Summerlin said. “For this to happen in this small a community. The work that man has done for this community. People just don’t realize he has invested so many man hours.”
